# 6 CHARACTERS

"Mother cried.
Father held Ender tight.
Peter shook his hand and said, 'You lucky little pinheaded fart-eater.'
Valentine kissed him and left her tears on his cheek...
'Kill some buggers for me!' Peter shouted.
'I love you, Andrew!; Mother called.
'We'll write to you!' Father said.
And as he got into the car that waited silently in the corridor, he heard Valentine's anguished cry. 'Come back to me! I love you forever!' "

Peter rules over Ender as a big brother. The character of Peter is ruthless. He makes himself powerful and demands authority and respect. However, believe it or not, Peter, ruler of earth, has a soft part of his heart. "But he did not reach for a pillow to smother Ender. He did not have a weapon. He whispered, 'Ender, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I know how it feels, I'm sorry, I'm your brother, I love you.'"

"' Welcome to the human race. Nobody controls his own life, Ender. The best you can do is choose to fill the roles given you by good people, by people who love you...'" Valentine is Ender's older sister. She is the only one in Ender's family on earth who thought of him everyday and rememebred his birthday. She is the one who continued to love Ender, even when they were not even on the same planet. Valentine is someone very speical to Ender, although he learned not to depend on relationships. I like how Valentine is a person that loves Ender. She is different from the other character in the way that she is caring and thoughtful of Ender. Siblings are very special people. :)

Colonel Graff is a big character in this book because he controls Ender's life in space. He makes sure that Ender has all the needed qualities to become a great commander. He admires the little boy, but restrains from being kind to him, for Ender's sake. I like this character. Colonel Graff is a better father to Ender than than the one back on earth. Although he was not very nice to Ender, he was always thinking of the best way for Ender. Although it was difficult on Ender, hiding the truth from him would've been even more difficult for Graff.

Mazer Rackham is the long ago superhero that Ender is supposed to take the place of. I admire the character of Mazer Rackham because he has sacrificed so many things for the outerspace missions such as his home, his family and friends, and himself. These things were taken away from him while other things such as time were lavishly forced into his hands, something he did not ask for, nor did he want. Many people hope to live forever. Mazer fulfilled that dream in some way and discovered that time is best spent with people that love you and people that you love with the amount of time given to you from the beginning.

Ender is Bean's commander, but Bean is Ender's teacher. Bean is a smart little boy like Ender when he first started out. He is stubborn and unintentionally teaches Ender to look at the situation fron the other person's perspective.

Alai is Ender's best friend. He tells him when he is wrong. He supports and encourages Ender. Even when Ender leaves him, Alai continues to be his best friend and stays loyal. The character of Alai is a nice kind of person and a priviledge to have around.

Ender is a genius, and has all the quality traits of a commander. However, he is compassionate. Compassion is something that a commander cannot have, especially toward the enemy. At first, Ender enjoys the games, but as time goes on and he continues to beat people and hurt people, he grows tired of the game and hates it.
"Ender grabbed Mazer's uniform and hung onto it, pulling him down so they were face to face. 'I didn't want to kill them all. I didn't want to kill anybody! I'm not a killer!'"
Ender is a difficult character because he has his own personality of being a brilliant, lovable, kind, and thoughtful boy, but he is manipulated and tricked into playing a game that he is not totally aware of, changing his character. People as bright as Ender always stand out in a crowd. I like him because in all the different difficult situations, he always paves himself a way out of it, and finishes strong.
